Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is often contracted from the bite of a tick.
Lyme disease can be a chronic, debilitating condition with numerous symptoms in many different body systems.
Lyme disease can mimic a lot of different medical conditions.
The bacteria that causes Lyme disease is called Borrelia burgdorferi.
Here are some of the most common symptoms of Lyme disease.
- Flu-like symptoms: fever, chills, sweats, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, and nausea
- Stiff neck
- Bull’s-eye rash
- Brain fog or cognitive issues
- Swollen and/or painful joints

If you’ve contracted Lyme disease, you’ve contracted a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. This bacteria is a shape-shifter. It can alter its form in the human body, a mechanism it uses to hide from the immune system.
Even though the bacteria is rather crafty, all is not lost. There is a lot you can do to reduce the bacteria load and the damage it does. One of my favorite strategies is through the use of herbs and herbal supplements. Let’s review some options that I’ve designed to help reduce the bacterial load, support your immune system, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, increase your detoxification efforts, and get you feeling better!
Foundation Formula is the crucial piece of the custom-made supplements for rebuilding a healthy body.
Foundation Formula is ideal for all levels of exposure to Lyme Disease bacteria. It is perfect for those who may be at greater risk for contracting the bacteria by helping to maintain a body that is able to resist the infection. It treats infections that have already occurred through its antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties.
I included some of my favorite herbs in Foundation Formula. Let’s review how they can help you!
Andrographis is the top anti-Lyme herb. It has anti-microbial, anti-inflammation, anti-parasitic, and anti-viral properties, which means it goes after Lyme (Borrelia burgdorferi), co-infections (read Bugs to Blame for more on this), parasites, and even viruses like Epstein-Barr (EBV). It aids in digestion, promotes detoxification, protects tissues, and promotes regeneration of damaged liver cells.
Japanese Knotweed is an excellent source of Resveratrol, a super powerful antioxidant. This herb works at the DNA level to block Lyme bacteria from invading the immune system. It is neuro-protective, an advantageous property as Lyme bacteria like to invade the nervous system, and also protects the cardiovascular system which is commonly compromised by co-infections Bartonella and Babesia.
Not only does Cat’s Claw work against Lyme bacteria, but it also blocks the Herxheimer reaction that occurs from the endotoxins that are released from the dying bacteria. Cat’s Claw also protects connective tissues which are commonly damaged by Lyme bacteria.
Eleutherococcus Senticoccus Root is an herb that is adaptogenic ie it helps the body’s resistance to stress: emotional, physical, and toxic. This herb is perfect to help the whole system withstand the fight and treatment against Lyme Disease. It boosts cognition, ideal for those dealing with brain fog due to Lyme Disease. It helps a person withstand the numerous stresses of having a chronic illness and supports the neuroendocrine system including the adrenal glands.
Milk Thistle Seed Extract is an essential herb to support people with Lyme. It is the cornerstone herb for detoxification as it supports and protects the liver. It encourages the production of glutathione, the master antioxidant, at an intercellular level. Milk Thistle is so powerful that it actually helps the liver regenerate new cells.
Turmeric is an herbaceous plant in the ginger family. It is included in the Foundation Formula for immune support and anti-inflammation. Turmeric helps to block the over-reactivity of the immune system, stabilizing it, all while reducing inflammation.
Another great blend of herbs I created for Lyme disease (and co-infections…we will go into more detail on those in upcoming articles) is Herbal Biotic. Herbal Biotic is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial supplement that includes concentrated herbal extracts to get the most potent formula. It contains both Chinese and Peruvian Cat’s Claw to go after Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme Disease) while also significantly decreasing inflammation and protecting connective tissue.
Let’s break down this formula and the powerful herbs it contains!
Isatis is included to reduce the Herxheimer reaction while adding to the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of this supplement. It is the main antibiotic herb in this formula. We used the whole Isatis plant; the root is highly antibacterial and the leaves are anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-parasitic. Isatis is particularly special in this mixture because it is effective against cell wall deficient bacteria like mycoplasma and recurring infections like chlamydia pneumonia.
The Herbal Biotic formula also contains monolaurin, lauric acid derived from coconut oil which is effective against all phases of Lyme bacteria including spirochetes, cysts, persisters, and breaks up biofilms. It is suitable for long term use and also is an effective treatment for Epstein Barr virus and candida, two common issues for Lyme patients.
Houttuynia has been included as an antimicrobial for many of the co-infections and viruses like Bartonella, mycoplasma, chlamydia pneumonia, and the herpes family of viruses.
Chinese Skullcap is a part of the Herbal Biotic formula for its Central Nervous System support. It is also anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, is effective against Lyme cysts, and destroys biofilms.
Oregano is one of the best natural substances for Lyme. It has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties that treat the complex illness of Lyme disease and associated infections.
Clove rounds out the ingredients in the Herbal Biotic formula for its antibacterial and natural pain-relieving properties.
Herbs are one of my favorite strategies for Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. They can be incredibly powerful while lacking the harsh side effects of other types of treatment. The benefits of each herb cross over to many different issues.
